CHAPTER 5- A NEW INVESTIGATION

When they entered Schultz’s room, Schultz greeted them standing. He was a tall, athletic person. The twinkle in his blue eyes revealed that he was very energetic. This contrasted sharply with his short gray hair. He was wearing a uniform that showed that he was a director of the United Nations Space Agency, dominated by blue, with red epaulets on his shoulders. In this form, he was more like a military official than a civilian ruler.

“Welcome, Mr. Mortimer. And you guys, too. I’m sorry to have met this way but, unfortunately, everything in life is not what you want. Please.” Schultz motioned for them to sit, then went to his own chair. “Yes, detective, we are listening to you.”

Mortimer asked Dr. Boyle, who was sitting to the opposite of Schultz when they came in, “Is it possible to tell us the exact time of the poisoning?”

Dr. Boyle moved slightly in his place and replied, “As a result of the autopsy, the poison was given about an hour and a half before Lord Edgrave’s speech, detective.”

“Can’t you give me a more precise time?”

The doctor shook his head. “Unfortunately, this is not possible.”

Mortimer didn’t like that answer. In this case, it would be more difficult to find out who the killer was. They would have to investigate, one by one, those who’d had the opportunity to poison Lord Edgrave at that time. If the poisoning had occurred just before the speech, this time interval would have been much narrower. Meanwhile, an attendant came in and presented the doctor with a three-dimensional report. After a brief look at the report, the doctor touched the device with his finger, indicating his approval. While he was doing this, Mortimer had the opportunity to look at the report.

“I think the catering report has also arrived. What does it say, doctor?”

“This report confirms my guess. The poison was added to apricot juice placed in a glass. The dose involved was sufficient to cause the victim to die approximately one hour later. This was obviously set up intentionally. The killer knew what he was doing.”

“Exactly, doctor,” Mortimer confirmed, nodding. “It’s going to make my job a lot harder, but there’s nothing to do about that. The next thing to do is to examine images from the kitchen during that one-and-a-half-hour time frame so we can find out who put the poison in the glass.”

“Just let me remind you of a point, detective,” the doctor said with a smile.” The servants are robots, so it’s probably a robot that put in the poison.”

“I know that, doctor. But if we can identify which robot it is, maybe we can determine who ordered it to put the poison in the glass.” Mortimer returned to Scott. “Go to the kitchen now. Start the process immediately to detect the glass where the poison was placed, and don’t leave until you’re done. I want you to oversee the whole process. Contact Cash and tell him to question Johnson again. Tell him to pressure him.
